Legislative Session Extended

Published: May 23, 2023

Last Friday was the scheduled end of legislative session in Illinois House, but due to the Democrat majority’s failure to present a budget proposal, that scheduled adjournment has been extended.

House Minority Leader Tony McCombie stood alongside members of her leadership team at a news conference last week to express disappointment that the Democrats’ self-imposed deadline could not be met, and that any ongoing discussions on the budget did not involve Republicans.

Those leadership members included Deputy House Leader Norine Hammond (Macomb), who also serves as lead Republican negotiator on the budget.

“Our asks are simple. We want no new spending. We want to pay our bills on time and to support good fiscal measures to increase our credit rating and continue to fund the Rainy Day Fund,” said Hammond. “We can get there, but only with true, genuine bipartisanship and true cooperation. That’s why we want to start seeing the Democrats over the coming days, regardless of their failures in this regard to date, we would like to see cooperation and a movement in this budget process.”

Session will resume in the Ilinois House on Wednesday, with the new adjournment date set for Saturday, May 27th.
